MG Windsor Road Test Review: A New Benchmark in EVs

Share

When we first got behind the wheel of the MG Windsor, it was clear that this could be MG’s standout EV. The public seems to agree, with sales consistently crossing the 3,000-unit mark every month since its launch in September 2024. But how does it really perform in everyday driving situations? Let’s dive in.

Pricing and Ownership Costs

The MG Windsor is priced between ₹13.50 lakh and ₹15.50 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the variant. For those looking to lower the initial purchase cost, MG offers a Battery-as-a-Service (BAAS) option. This financing plan, available through partner financial institutions, reduces the upfront price by ₹3.5 lakh by allowing buyers to pay for the battery in monthly installments. Under this scheme, users either pay a fixed monthly fee or are charged per kilometer driven, for a duration of up to 8 years. It’s a flexible plan designed to make EV ownership more accessible.

Charging Performance

The Windsor is equipped to handle various charging speeds. Using a 45kW DC fast charger, the 38kWh battery goes from zero to 80 percent in just 55 minutes. When plugged into a 60kW charger, it reached the same level in about 42 minutes. A 30kW DC fast charger took 43 minutes to charge from 35 to 85 percent, with another 20 minutes needed for a full top-up. If you’re using an 11kW AC charger, expect a 25 to 80 percent charge in around 3.5 hours. The variety of charging options ensures that the Windsor caters to both fast-paced lifestyles and overnight charging routines.

Comfort and Seating

While the seats may look as plush as living room sofas, they lean towards being firmer than they appear. The front seats offer solid comfort, although some might feel the lumbar support is a little too pronounced. Ventilated seats are included and controlled via the touchscreen, but unlike most cars, the Windsor starts the ventilation at its lowest setting, ensuring a more gradual cooling experience.

Cargo Space

Boot space is where the Windsor really shines. Offering a generous 604 litres, it has one of the largest storage capacities in its segment. Higher variants equipped with a subwoofer see the capacity slightly reduced to 579 litres. There’s room beneath the boot floor for additional storage, though a spare tire isn’t provided as standard. However, buyers can opt for one as an extra, along with a parcel shelf.
