Mercedes G-Class Electric: A Bold Step into the Future

Imagine being behind the wheel, engaging “Rock” mode, switching to neutral, and then hitting the G-Turn button. With a simple flex of your right foot, the 3.1-ton beast pivots like a ballerina, spinning on its axis. It’s hard not to be impressed by the sheer agility of the all-electric G-Class.

Unveiled to the world as the EQG concept, this version of the iconic G-Wagon—officially named the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology—is Mercedes’ vision for a zero-emissions future. But can an EV truly carry forward the rugged and fearless spirit of this legendary SUV?

Off-Roading the Electric G-Class

To see what the electric G-Class is really made of, we took it to the Learn Off-road course near Mumbai—a playground for testing any SUV’s limits. One of the first challenges was navigating a side slope. With the car leaning dramatically, all I could do was trust its ability to handle steep 35-degree inclines. The G-Class Electric didn’t flinch, proving that it still carries its off-road heritage proudly.

Next came a wheel articulation challenge. As one wheel lifted off the ground, the suspension stretched impressively to keep the SUV stable and composed. Every obstacle we threw at it only confirmed one thing—this is not just a pretty EV. It’s built for adventure.

On-Road Drive and Performance

On regular roads, the electric G-Class also holds its own. Mercedes has added a faint, futuristic hum to the vehicle, which they call the “Aura” of the G 580. This sound alerts pedestrians that something big and powerful is approaching. There’s also a feature called G-Roar that mimics the growl of a V8 engine. It’s a creative touch, but it doesn’t quite have the same authority as the real thing.

Despite its massive size and weight, the performance is impressive. It accelerates swiftly and feels surprisingly nimble. Whether cruising through city streets or rolling along highways, the electric G-Class offers a confident and luxurious drive.

The Verdict

The Mercedes G-Class Electric successfully blends the best of both worlds—luxurious sophistication and off-road ruggedness—with an electric twist. While its sound design could use a little more refinement, there’s no doubt that it’s ready to tackle the future head-on. For those who want an EV without sacrificing capability, this electrified G-Wagon is a game-changer.
